At the heart of the History Department’s philosophy is the profound belief that history matters. The biggest challenge facing great teachers and exponents of history is not to teach History itself, nor even the lessons of history, but to ensure that students develop a deep-seated appreciation of the value of history and understand and can articulate why history matters within local, national and international communities. How to ignite the first spark which lights up one source of history and then another, connecting and linking, writing bright words across the dark face of the present. As History teachers we know that history matters, we know that it is thrilling, absorbing, fascinating, delightful and infuriating and the fact that it embodies life itself.
