PSHE/CAREERS

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) Education within and beyond the classroom is regarded as the key to the successful development of all our students. Our PSHE programme in Years 7-9 is taught throughout the school for one period a week and via specialised events delivered by staff members and facilitators from the wider community.

In Years 10 and 11 PSHE is taught via specialised events and mini-lectures delivered by staff members and facilitators from the wider community.

Our curriculum is built around the following themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (economic wellbeing, careers and the wider world of work). In addition, we will promote an understanding of human rights and global issues.

All lessons, lectures and events are linked to the UNCRC. To see a summary of the rights: https://downloads.unicef.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/UNCRC_summary.pdf

 Careers Education:

Careers advice and guidance starts in Year 7 and continues in each year group.  This takes the form of outside speakers, events, work place visits and is embedded across the curriculum.

In your final year here at Calthorpe Park, there are plenty of opportunities for you to prepare for what you will do and where you will go after leaving school.  Early in the Autumn Term, there will be a meeting for all Year 11 students and their parents to talk about colleges and the application process, with college representatives attending and giving talks.  At the same time we publish the list of all college open evenings as the majority of them take place in September, October and November, so plan your visits and go to as many colleges as you can to get the best idea of the right one for you.  Check the college websites for full details and also for application forms or information about how to apply, including their deadlines.  Farnborough 6th Form is our partner college, so if you apply to them, their tutors come into school to conduct interviews, usually in the Spring term.  For any queries, please contact Ms Wayman or Mrs Al-Dabagh.

Careers Advisor:

Christine Mirtle is the new Careers Adviser from Hampshire Futures (part of Hampshire County Council), working at Calthorpe Park School every Tuesday.  She is qualified to level 6 in Career Guidance and Development, and is registered with the Career Development Institute.  She has worked in education for many years, and most recently as a Careers Adviser in West Berkshire secondary schools and sixth forms.

She sees her role as guiding students to make aspirational, but realistic, informed decisions for their future pathways by asking challenging questions and providing the information and tools for them to explore the possibilities open to them.  She encourages them to find out what is out there in the careers world, and research what may suit them, to keep options open and not to be afraid to make decisions when the time is right.

Students can make appointments to see Christine on Tuesdays by sending an email to Careers@staff.calthorpepark.hants.sch.uk and a time will be arranged as soon as possible.  They can also speak to Ms Wayman or Mrs Al-Dabagh.
